What Our Students Have To Say

Section Shape Image

Hear from our students about their experiences studying with our online lessons.

Amanda M

Coto Japanese Academy has been a wonderful way to learn Japanese. I've been doing their online classes for a year and a half now.

I am glad to have chosen Coto, as my go-to language school in Japan. The wonderful thing is that i don't need to be physically present (i live in a neighboring timezone) and the online lesson resources are excellent! I love how the lesson recordings are made systematically available to you after class. The teachers are also very fun and make learning enjoyable.

My wife and I had a few months of lessons together online only. Our teacher Naoko-sensei was so kind and hard-working, we had excellent guidance from her. We will certainly enrol for more lessons when time permits. The staff were all very professional and their YouTube channel is great as well. I'd recommend Coto to any student wanting to improve their Japanese.

Schedules are offered at the same time each week.

Private lessons:

You can select materials appropriate for your level.

Scheduling is flexible and based on the teachers availability.

How do I book lessons?

After logging in, click 'Book Classes' at the top of the screen. Choose the following to book your preferred class.

  • Choose type the of classes: PRIVATE or GROUP
  • Choose a level: Select your preferred level on the scale
  • Choose DAY and TIME: Choose your preferred date and time

If you would like to participate just once, make sure to leave the box unchecked.

How long is each lesson?

All lessons are 50 minutes each. Some group courses are a combination of two 50-minute lessons. In that case, the lesson will be 50 minutes + 10 minutes break + 50 minutes.

Do I need to purchase textbooks?

For Group lessons, it will depend on the course you are taking. If the course requires you to purchase textbooks, the Amazon link will be sent through chat, so please make sure to purchase them before the first lesson. On the other hand, some classes only use materials distributed as PDFs.

For Private lessons, the appropriate materials will depend on your Japanese level and learning goals. For your first class, we can use PDF materials or general textbooks, but please make sure to let the teacher know your preference in advance through the Private Chat. The teacher may also be able to provide you with recommendations, so feel free to consult us about this.

What is a trial class? (group lessons)

A trial class is a trial class for a group class. Booking a Trial class means you will participate in the group class just once. We recommend doing this when you're not sure if the class will match your level and needs, or if you want to try taking a lesson with new material.

What is a one-time class? (private class)

A one-time class is a trial class for a private class. Booking a One-time class means you will be participating in the private class just once. We recommend doing this when you're not sure if the class will match your level and needs, or if you want to try taking lessons with a new teacher.

What is a one-time class? (private class)

A one-time class is a trial class for a private class. Booking a One-time class means you will be participating in the private class just once. We recommend doing this when you're not sure if the class will match your level and needs, or if you want to try taking lessons with a new teacher.

Can I participate in the same class with the same teacher every week with one booking?

This is possible with recurring lessons. However, if you run out of points, the recurring reservation will be canceled, and you will not be able to keep the same time slot with the same teacher. Please note that other students will be able to reserve that spot during this time. It may also be possible that you won't be able to book the same teacher due to changes in the teacher's schedule and availability.

What are the levels offered in the lessons?

The levels are generally as follows

·   Level 1: Total Beginner, Survival Conversation Level

·   Level 2: Beginner, JLPT N5 level

·   Level 3: Beginner, JLPT N5 level

·   Level 4: Upper Beginner, JLPT N4 level

·   Level 5: Upper Beginner, JLPT N4 level

Please see the Course Catalogue for more detailed information on each course.

What should I do if I don’t know which class matches my Japanese skill?

You can choose our trial class or a one-time class and take part in the lesson. It is advised to sign up for this trial class to determine whether the teacher and class level are a good fit.

Do you have lessons for total beginners?

Yes, we do! The recommended group lesson for beginners is 'Practical Japanese for Beginners'. As for private lessons, we recommend using 'Nihongo Fun and Easy 1' as class material. Please see the course catalog for more information on 'Practical Japanese for Beginners'. You may also view a sample of 'Nihongo Fun and Easy 1' through this link.

Do you have a private class option?

Yes, we do have a private class option! If you are still unsure whether a private class or the teacher will suit your learning style, you can book a one-time class for a private class, which will allow you to participate in a private class only once. However, private lessons are strictly one-on-one lessons.

We have professional Coto instructors located in different locations around the world.

Different from c2c platforms, we provide lessons with experienced professional teachers that know how to get you speaking quickly.

We also like to hire teachers that have experience working abroad so that they have cultural awareness of different cultures and know how to communicate in a pleasant way.
